The brief

Coventry's School of Health and Care needed a simulation room for training students in clinical settings. It had to work for a whole class at once and also give one user a highly accurate 3D view for detailed work such as anatomy.

What we installed

Glowspace designed and installed a three-wall LED CAVE. The walls are 6m, 7.2m and 6m wide, all 2.36m high, using 1.25mm pixel pitch LED running at 120Hz for active stereo 3D. An ultra high-end workstation drives the whole room.

Three modes, one button

  • Group 3D: up to 40 students wear RF shutter glasses and see the scenario in stereo 3D.
  • Tracked single user: infrared camera tracking follows one user's head position, so the 3D view is correct for that person.
  • Dual-view: the glasses switch mode so two groups see two different images on the same walls at the same time.

How it is used

Students use the room to practise patient care in settings such as a hospital ward, an operating theatre and the back of an ambulance, and to examine 3D anatomical models. It is used across courses including diagnostic radiography, occupational therapy and physiotherapy. The CAVE opened in August 2024.
