The brief
Coventry's engineering department needed a large 3D display where students could review designs together at full scale and work with collaborators elsewhere.
What we installed
Glowspace designed and installed a 6.6m × 2.36m LED Powerwall in the Beatrice Shilling Building. It uses the same 1.25mm pixel pitch LED as the School of Health CAVE, running at 120Hz for active stereo 3D, and is driven by an ultra high-end workstation.
Three modes, one button
- Group 3D: students wear RF shutter glasses and see designs in stereo 3D.
- Tracked single user: infrared camera tracking follows one user's head position, so the 3D view is correct for that person.
- Dual-view: the glasses switch mode so two groups see two different images at the same time.
Collaborative engineering
The Powerwall works with industry-standard engineering software for collaborative design review. Students can display a design at life size, walk around it and examine individual components.
It can also link to VR sessions anywhere in the world, so remote users in headsets and the group in the room can work on the same digital twin at the same time.
